Suffolk Construction

Suffolk Construction is one of the most successful privately held building contractors in the country. With annual revenue of $2 billion, Suffolk provides preconstruction, construction management, design-build, and general contracting services to clients in the healthcare, science and technology, education, federal government, and commercial sectors. Engineering-News Record ranked Suffolk #41 on its 2013 national list of “Top 400 Contractors.”

Suffolk’s vision is to “transform the construction experience by building smart,” and the company is committed to reaching this goal by adhering to three strategies: people, innovation, and community. The company’s project teams provide clients comprehensive planning services, innovative solutions and technologies, and proven processes, such as Building Information Modeling (BIM), to deliver the most complex building construction projects on schedule and on budget, with minimal risk.

Suffolk is also a community-conscious organization dedicated to environmentally friendly and sustainable business practices, and is committed to making a positive impact in its local communities through grassroots volunteer work, employee fundraising, and corporate giving. Two years ago, Suffolk launched its first annual Subcontractor Development Series to assist disadvantaged, minority, and women-owned trade subcontractor firms in fostering long-term relationships with Suffolk. The eight-session series is part of Suffolk’s award-winning Learning + Development program, which continues to set the industry standard for construction training initiatives. The series is offered exclusively to all union and non-union subcontractors that are certified by the Massachusetts Supplier Diversity Office as a Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE), Minority Business Enterprise (MBE), or Women Owned Business Enterprise (WBE) and have been in business for at least two years.

In the SDS program, participants learn firsthand about Suffolk’s construction management procedures and processes, ranging from risk management and safety to estimating and purchasing. The program also features an additional project management class designed to review Suffolk’s innovative, web-based collaboration tools that result in an efficient document management process for all project stakeholders. Suffolk’s Learning + Development opportunities are usually only offered internally, but with this program, they’ve begun to offer their award-winning training classes and state-of-the-art training center externally. The classes are taught by Suffolk’s top executives who are all leaders in construction that freely share the intimate details of how Suffolk has successfully become the industry’s top local builder.

Suffolk’s 2012 and 2013 Subcontractor Development Series graduates have been very successful in building, establishing great relationships, and receiving construction opportunities for their businesses. Suffolk has awarded over 70 projects totaling more than $70 million to DBE, MBE, and WBE subcontractors, many having successfully completed the program. A total of 55 subcontractors from the New England area have graduated and now work with dozens of local contractors that are directly benefitting from this subcontractor training. “Suffolk’s training program has clearly been successful for SDO-certified clients. By increasing the capacity of DBE, MBE, and WBE firms partnering with Suffolk Construction, as well as other prime contractors in the construction industry, we are changing how business is done in Massachusetts one SDO-certified construction firm at a time,” said Reggie Nunnally from the State of Massachusetts Supplier and Diversity Office.
