PASSION:

Lisa became involved with Girls on the Run about five years ago as a volunteer coach for the Blackstone School girls’ after-school team.

IMPACT:

Girls on the Run’s after-school program is a physical activity-based positive youth development program that enhances girls’ social, psychological, and physical skills. Lisa and 200 other volunteer coaches in greater Boston lead the program each season, using running as a platform for promoting holistic health outcomes for girls in grades 3-8. Lisa has been a dedicated coach for girls on her GOTR team at the Blackstone Elementary School, where 85 percent of the students qualify for free lunch based on family income. As a coach, Lisa goes to the school for 90-minute GOTR sessions every week. The relationships Lisa builds with girls on the team through her commitment and coaching are integral to the positive outcomes she achieves for participating girls.

Lisa’s efforts have had a direct impact on the high-need 3rd-5th grade girls on her Girls on the Run team as she guides them through running practices and other physical activities every week, teaching life skills and promoting healthy outcomes. Lisa motivated her girls and brought them to the end-of-season celebratory 5K event that engaged over 600 participating girls from towns throughout greater Boston. Completing a 5K gave the girls a tangible sense of achievement as well as a framework for setting and achieving life goals.
