Tom Cocke
SVP Group Creative Director
The Buntin Group
I wrote my first ad in an attempt to attract an audience to my thesis presentation on Palladian architecture. No one showed. So I moved to Atlanta and enrolled in the Portfolio Center to learn to write better ads. And ditch a career in architecture.
My first job in Atlanta was working on the Delta Air Lines account at BBDO while moonlighting as an instructor at The Portfolio Center. Then I moved to Nashville for my first tour at The Buntin Group working on Cracker Barrel and Goody’s Headache Powders. Next came a five-year stint at Wray Ward in Charlotte where I worked on stuff you’ve never heard of that actually helped me win a few awards. I returned to Buntin in 2001 and have since written for several banks, multiple restaurants, three lotteries and a paper plate company…just to name a few.
The One Show, CA, Clios, OBIES, EMMYs, National ADDYs, London International and the Jay Chiat Awards have been kind enough to notice my work. But I’m especially proud of an International Bluegrass Music Award for package design (somebody’s gotta write the liner notes). The Nashville Ad Club has mistakenly named me Copywriter of the Year three times. And I somehow weaseled my way into judging the Effie Awards, the National Student ADDYs and the National American Advertising Awards.
Currently, I get my kicks working on a short film about Route 66 and running a small vintage business @madcenturyvintage.
By the way, I got an A- in that Architectural History course. So not all is lost.
